Umayyads ____L. A dynasty that ruled the Muslim Empire from A.D. 661 to 750 and later established a kingdom in Al-Andalus.

Shi’a ____S.The branch of Islam whose members acknowledge Ali and his descendants as the rightful successors of Muhammad.

Sunni ____R. The branch of Islam whose members acknowledge the first four Caliphs as the rightful successors of Muhammad.

Sufi ____N. A Muslim who seeks to achieve direct contact with God through mystical means.

Abbasids ____T. A dynasty that ruled much of the Muslim Empire from A.D. 750 to 1258

Al-Andalus ____M. Capital of the Umayyad dynasty

Fatimid ____O.A member a Muslim dynasty that traced its ancestry to Muhammad’s daughter Fatima and that built and built an empire in North Africa, Arabia, Syria in the 10th – 12th centuries.

House of Wisdom ____G. Center of Learning established in Baghdad in the 800s. Basis of modern University system.

Calligraphy ____P. The art of beautiful handwriting used by Muslims to create art because depictions of living beings are prohibited by Shari’a law.
