What does the landscape between Jeddah and Mecca look like?
I am trying to describe a journey from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Mecca, but I don’t know what the natural landscape looks like. (I am only interested in the natural landscape, as the journey takes place in the early 16th century.) Can someone please enlighten me?
The Makkah-Jeddah highway is 80 km long. The area between Makkah and Jeddah includes sand and Mountains. As the western region (aka. Hejaz) is Mountanious and black in colour because of lava beds, so the mounations of Makkah-Jeddah highway are also black in colour. Its elevation is about 300 meters from sea level. Recently I visited Makkah and Jeddah, the land all around Makkah-Jeddah highway is turned green because of the recent heavy rains in Makkah and Jeddah which caused floods.

Starts out with barren yellow dirt, then dark barren hills and mountains gradually take over. Go to the satellite images on Google maps or on wikimapia to get an idea.

well, i have gone on that highway so many times. basically all there is between them is desert. there is an area called "bahra". there is also a big Quran statue looking thing (it’s pretty nice). there is a checkpoint before entering Makkah to makesure all those who enter are Muslims.

Its kind of like southwest US or northern Mexico, gets rocky around Mecca.
This picture is a few miles outside Mecca
