Who Was Lawrence of Arabia?

TE Lawrence was born on 16 August 1888, his father was the seventh Baronet of Westmeath in Ireland. He was educated at City of Oxford High School for Boys and at Jesus College, Oxford. In the summer of 1909 he set out on a three month walking tour of crusader castles in Syria which provided research for his First Class Honours thesis The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture - to the end of the twelfth century. In 1910 he travelled to the Middle East as a part of an archaeological team, he studied Arabic at Byblos and worked on digs in Syria, Mesopotamia and Egypt. In January 1914, Lawrence worked on a covert operation charting and mapping the Negev desert with regard to military strategies and logistics. At the outbreak of World War One he was posted to the Intelligence Staff of the GOC Middle East in Cairo. Lawrence fought with Arab irregular troops under the command of Emir Faisal, a son of Sherif Hussein of Mecca against Ottoman forces. Lawrence managed to persuade the Arab leaders to co-ordinate their campaign and work together. Lawrence directed them to not drive the Arabs out of Medina therefore committing more Turkish troops to the garrison there while the Arab concentrated on attacking the Hejaz railway that supplied the garrison. Lawrence planned the sacking of Aqaba and the 1918 taking of the city of Damascus where Lawrence helped set up a provisional government under Faisal. However with the invasion of the French and the subsequent Battle of Maysaloun, his rule was brought to a swift end in 1920. War correspondent Lowell Thomas, shot a film of Lawrence’s exploits in Arabia, it was seen by over four million people, giving Lawrence great publicity, he subsequently became an advisor to Winston Churchill at the Colonial Office. In August 1922, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force as an aircraftman under the name John Hume Ross, however he was found out sacked. He then joined the Royal Tank Corps, calling himself TE Shaw. He died, aged forty-six in a tragic motorcycle accident.
