Is it possible to do the Shikoku pilgrimage without a map?
If there are signposts to each temple i’d rather not buy a guide/map
I highly recommend that you bring the map, unless you can fully understand Japanese and can read ancient stone sign posts like shown in the attached links:

Shikoku Pilgrimage will require you to visit 88 temples and walk nearly 1000 miles.
Do you think you can walk around 1000 miles (not a straight line) without a map?

Yes, my friends mother did it by bus ! Some might think that’s cheating, but older people do it this way as they would otherwise be unable to do it at all.
And no, I really doubt if you can do it without a map of some kind.
