Back in the 4th century, Helena, the Christian mother of Constantine, toured the Holy Land and staked out the holy sites of Christianity–the birthplace, crucifixion site, and resurrection site. She based her locations on divine guidance revealed in dreams. Churches were built on these sites, though different nations occupied Jerusalem at different times. Romans, Muslims, Christians, Turks, Arabs, and Jews have all had their turn ruling the holy city over the centuries, and newer churches have been erected over older ones. Churches can be run by Greek Orthodox, Catholic, or Protestant clergy. Visitors encounter both shabby and garishly elaborate altars at all the holy sites. There is a street called the Via Dolorosa down which Jesus allegedly carried his cross on his way to Golgotha. Christians stage processions down this street every Easter. Other sites in Israel that are sacred to Christians are the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, Bethlehem, Nazereth, and Capernaum. Jerusalem was not only a prize to obtain during the Crusades (11th-13th centuries) but it represented to both Christians and Jews the very navel of the earth and the umbilical between earth and heaven. The final judgment is believed by some to be scheduled to take place in the Valley of Jehosophat adjacent to the temple mount.
