Take the Journey of a lifetime

Where did christian pilgrims going on a pilgrimage stay in the late middle ages?

For example, did they stay in a church overnight etc? Also, did they have to pay and how much?

They camped outside like anyone else.

We are still in the late middle ages. They stay at my house. I didn’t charge them if they let me sleep with their daughters.

Very few pilgrims reached their destinations. Those who did stayed with monks or nuns.

Pilgrims to the Holy sites in the Holy Land stayed in various places. The most common places were called "caravansaries" which were like motels in their day. The animals stayed on the first floor and the people stayed above them in a loft with a bed. Christians pilgrims continued to go to the Holy Lands even after Islam had taken over these lands from the Eastern Roman Empire. The Crusades made pilgrimage more difficult but Muslims by law had to show hospitality to all pilgrims. Pilgrims often got special rates because of the nature of their travels but paying for food and lodging was common practice.
