China â?? experience a spiritual and mystical journey

Noodles and the Great Wall of China are perhaps the most common things that come to mind when we think of China. Some would go a step further and think of Chinese porcelain ware and crockery. Use our travel guide to help you discover everything about China.

China, with its distinction of being home to more than a billion people, is also a land of several ancient cultures. The Great Wall of China was built over several centuries by various dynasties. The wall itself stands as testimony to ancient Chinese architecture, as parts of it have been built with mud and sand. In some places roots of trees and fibrous plants were used. In places the wall is wide enough to allow four heavy trucks to travel alongside each other.

Chinese folk arts, dance, and music are inspiring to the mind and soul. If you have a passion for the ancient arts, you should consider China for …

The Hajj and Eid al-Adha

The Hajj and Eid al-Adha
The Boston Globe
December 12, 2008.

Yesterday marked the end of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, or “Feast of Sacrifice” - which also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual Pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. One of the pillars of Islamic faith, the Hajj must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by any Muslim who has the ability to do so. This year, nearly 3 million Muslims made the Hajj, without major incident, and are now returning to their homes across the world…(More)

Sidney D. Gamble: Pilgrimage to Miao Feng Shan

Part of the Sidney D. Gamble collection at Duke University Libraries:

(Introductory text by The China Institute in NY):

Between 1924-1927, Sidney D. Gamble made three trips to Miao Feng Shan (Marvelous Peak Mountain), a popular Daoist Pilgrimage site.

Dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Bi Xia Yun Jun (Princess of the Clouds Before Dawn), the temple was located on a hill about 25 miles northwest of Beijing.

Most worshippers made the arduous three-day journey in the spring. Pilgrims went either in groups organized by guilds or temple societies, or on their own as individual penitents.

Although the primary purpose of the journey was religious, Gamble’s visual record illustrates that these pilgrimages also served a lively social function.

Upon his return to America, Gamble edited the footage shot on one of his trips into a short 16mm documentary. We have re-edited his film slightly, retaining his original titles, and adding music.

In 1989, Pilgrimage to Miao Feng Shan was re-edited and a film score of traditional music arranged by Tan Dun was added. The film accompanied the first exhibit of Sidney Gamble’s photographs China between Revolutions: The Sidney D. Gamble Photographs 1917-1932.

Medical Mecca - China

November 2004
A controversial treatment using the stem cells of aborted foetuses is producing remarkable results. Many desperate patients see it as their only hope.

They come from all over the world in search of miracles. “We heard that people were coming over to China and they were getting better,” explains Mike Thomas. “They were walking again, talking again, breathing again.” China’s lax safety regulations and different ethical considerations have enabled Dr Huang Hongyun to blaze a trail in this field. He is the only doctor in the world to inject stem cells directly into the brains or spinal cords of ALS suffers or paraplegics. His work has turned two pieces of conventional medical wisdom on their head — that spinal injuries are untreatable and that ALS is impossible to stabilise. For the first time ever, Dr Huang has allowed tv cameras to film the extraordinary surgical procedure. In the words of patient Laura Jackson, “He does miracles here.”
