The Pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah : Part 2/5

This program observes the rites, rituals, and religious fervor of Hajj, an annual Muslim Pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah), the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Viewers will follow an executive from suburban Malaysia, a religious radio commentator from rural South Africa and an Irish-born college professor from the United States on the spiritual journey of a lifetime.

In the middle of Mecca is a great mosque called the al-Masjid al-Haram, inside is the Kaabah, the 50-foot tall, black-draped shrine that is Islam’s most revered structure.

According to Islamic teachings God commanded the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) to raise the foundations of the Kaabah as a place for worship. Thousands of years later, after the Kaabah had become a center of pagan worship, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) cleansed it of its many idols and rededicated it to the worship of the one God, who in Arabic is called Allah.

Today, pilgrims retrace the steps of Prophet Abraham (pbuh) and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as they perform the rites of the hajj with their fellow pilgrims.

Sidney D. Gamble: Pilgrimage to Miao Feng Shan

Part of the Sidney D. Gamble collection at Duke University Libraries:
http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/gamble

(Introductory text by The China Institute in NY):

Between 1924-1927, Sidney D. Gamble made three trips to Miao Feng Shan (Marvelous Peak Mountain), a popular Daoist Pilgrimage site.

Dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Bi Xia Yun Jun (Princess of the Clouds Before Dawn), the temple was located on a hill about 25 miles northwest of Beijing.

Most worshippers made the arduous three-day journey in the spring. Pilgrims went either in groups organized by guilds or temple societies, or on their own as individual penitents.

Although the primary purpose of the journey was religious, Gamble’s visual record illustrates that these pilgrimages also served a lively social function.

Upon his return to America, Gamble edited the footage shot on one of his trips into a short 16mm documentary. We have re-edited his film slightly, retaining his original titles, and adding music.

In 1989, Pilgrimage to Miao Feng Shan was re-edited and a film score of traditional music arranged by Tan Dun was added. The film accompanied the first exhibit of Sidney Gamble’s photographs China between Revolutions: The Sidney D. Gamble Photographs 1917-1932.

Whoa, this edited out to be 1.8 GIGABYTES. That’s…huge. If this is taking awhile to load, I apologize. Just pause this and then go and open a new tab or something interesting. Oh, and sorry if this is uploaded late, it’s taking a loooong time to upload, based on its huge file size.

I actually started uploading this at 10:45 Eastern time, and it’s saying it’ll take eight hours to upload, and this could take any amount of time to process.
