The Hajj and Eid al-Adha
The Boston Globe
December 12, 2008.
Yesterday marked the end of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, or “Feast of Sacrifice” - which also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual Pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. One of the pillars of Islamic faith, the Hajj must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by any Muslim who has the ability to do so. This year, nearly 3 million Muslims made the Hajj, without major incident, and are now returning to their homes across the world…(More)

The Kaaba (Arabic: ?????? Al-Kaabah; IPA “Cube” is a cuboidal building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is the most sacred site in Islam.[2] The building is more than two thousand years old, and according to Islamic tradition the first building at the site was built by Abraham (Ibrahim). The building has a mosque built around it, the Masjid al-Haram. All Muslims around the world face towards the Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are.
One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every capable Muslim to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. Multiple parts of the Hajj require pilgrims to walk several times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction (as viewed from above). This circumambulation, the Tawaf, is also performed by pilgrims during the Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).[2] However, the most dramatic times are during the Hajj, when two million pilgrims simultaneously gather to circle the building on the same day.
The Kaaba is a large masonry structure roughly the shape of a cube. It is made of granite from the hills near Mecca, and stands upon a 25 cm (10 in) marble base, which projects outwards about 35 cm (1 ft).[2] It is approximately 13.10 m (42.98 ft) high, with sides measuring 11.03 m (36.19 ft) by 12.86 m (42.19 ft).[3][4] The four corners of the Kaaba roughly face the four points of the compass.[2] In the eastern corner of the Kaaba is the Ruknu l-Aswad “Black Stone” or al-?ajaru l-Aswad, possibly a meteorite remnant; at the northern corner is the Ruknu l-??r?q? “The Iraqi corner”. The western corner is the Ruknu sh-Sh?m? “the Levantine corner” and the southern is Ruknu l-Yaman? “the Yemeni corner”.[2][4]
The Kaaba is covered by a black silk and gold curtain known as the kiswah, which is replaced yearly.[5][6] About two-thirds of the way up runs a band of gold-embroidered calligraphy with Qur’anic text, including the Islamic declaration of faith, the Shahadah.
Nowadays, entry to the Kaaba’s interior is generally not permitted except for certain rare occasions and for a limited numbers of guests. The entrance is a door set 2 m (7 ft) above the ground on the north-eastern wall of the Kaaba, which acts as the façade.[2] There is a wooden staircase on wheels, usually stored in the mosque between the arch-shaped gate of Ban? Shaybah and the well of Zamzam. Inside the Kaaba, there is a marble and limestone floor. The interior walls are clad with marble halfway to the roof; tablets with Qur’anic inscriptions are inset in the marble. The top part of the walls are covered with a green cloth decorated with gold embroidered Qur’anic verses. Caretakers perfume the marble cladding with scented oil, the same oil used to anoint the Black Stone outside.
Left: Conceptual representation of the Kaaba, as built by Abraham; Right: Representation of the Kaaba as it stands today
There is also a semi-circular wall opposite, but unconnected to, the north-west wall of the Kaaba known as the hat?m. It is 90 cm (35 in) in height and 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in length, and is composed of white marble. The space between the hat?m and the Kaaba was for a time belonging to the Kaaba itself, and so is generally not entered during the tawaf (ritual circumambulation). It is also thought by some that this space bears the graves of Abu Simbel, prophet Ishmael and his mother Hagar.[2]
Muslims throughout the world face the Kaaba during prayers, which are five times a day. For most places around the world, coordinates for Mecca suffice. Worshippers in the the Sacred Mosque pray in concentric circles around the Kaaba.

Aravind Adiga wins Man Booker Prize 2008
This years Man Booker Prize 2008 Britains best known and most generous literary award has been won by a 33 year old first time Indian novelist Aravind Adiga for his novel White Tiger. The work is based upon vivid exploration of Indias class struggle told through the story of a village boy who becomes the chauffeur to a rich man. The awards administrators emphasized, “The White Tiger is the ninth winning novel to take its inspiration from India or Indian identity. The £50,000 prize, announced in London, makes Adiga the fifth Booker winner of Indian ethnicity and the second youngest winner in the award’s 40-year history, Ben Okri was 32 when he won for The Famished Road in 1991. He is also only the third winner to triumph with a debut novel. The first debut novelist to win the Booker was Arundhati Roy. Aravind Adiga joins V S Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai in the Booker hall of fame.
OFW beheaded in Jeddah
The beheading by sword of an Overseas Filipino Worker convicted of killing a Saudi national is utterly horrendous. This despite appeals made by the lawyer hired by the Philippine consulate general in Jeddah and the requests sent twice by President Arroyo to the Saudi king asking clemency for Bidoya. The Saudi king refused clemency to Bidoya on the grounds that the victim’s family was adamant in refusing to forgive Bidoya, and insisted on their right to the imposition of equivalent penalty. Our condolences to the bereaved family. However, at the same time, it needs to be pointed out that death penalty is a symptom of a culture of violence. By refusing to pardon the offender, the family has failed to show mercy of which Prophet Mohammad was an embodiment. How can such cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment and a violation of the right to life be compatible with faith and Islam? One fails to understand.
Malawi drops HIV cash handouts
Malawian government has reviewed its HIV AIDS policy. Under the revamped strategy the Malawian civil servants with HIV, who used to receive an extra $35 a month to help them buy more food, are now to get a food handout instead. The step is intended to prevent the misuse of money. Malawi is among the countries worst affected by Aids, with about 7% of the 13m population affected. The recommendation is to give them cooking oil, some eggs as support. HIV-positive employees will also be educated about the virus and get advice about safe sex. According to the UN World Health Organization, about 35% of those infected with HIV in Malawi are now taking ARV drugs. Last year, the government called on all sexually active people in the country to take an Aids test. Surely such measures apart from ensuring best usage of already meager state funds will also help in improving the health of Malawians suffering from AIDS.
Nepali Muslims Performing Hajj to drop this year
Nepali Muslims might not make it this year to the traditional Hajj Pilgrimage to Makkah. In 2007 405 of them left Kathmandu for the holy city. This year that number might drop to only 33.The gates to the city might be closed after Saudi authorities decided to shut down the more dilapidated buildings in Kawasaripha, accommodation hub for visiting pilgrims, in order to build new ones. The decision is aimed at improving crowd controls for the millions of pilgrims who come, but it has a negative impact on low-income pilgrims who can only afford cheap accommodations. For would-be hajjis the cost of finding lodgings in the holy city would top US$ 800. Accustomed to spending US$ 200 at most, not all Nepali Muslims can afford to live in five star hotels. The Saudis have already rejected a Nepali proposal to house Nepali pilgrims in accommodations her from Makkah. Nepals domestic situation is also complicating matters. Members of the Nepali Hajj committee are unhappy with secular policies of the Maoist government which according to them do not adhere to Muslim guidelines.
