Even though the surface is desert-like and may appear dead (fluvially), groundwater can be quite abundant, keeping a well flush with water. I would say, geological normal? No, not usually. Because even though four thousand years is a short time geologically speaking (compared to the age of the earth), it's more than enough time for drastic climate change, and surrounding landscape alteration.
