Zamzam water comes from a well near the Kaaba. It has a high salt and calcium content with some fluorides and is from the occasional rain that falls on the Wadi Ibrahim. The well is about 30 metres deep and some of it is in bedrock, which contributes a small proportion of the water. Most of the water flows into the well through a sandy or broken rocky layer between the surface rocks and the bedrock. As Makka expands, paving of the ground and the use of drainage have reduced the supply of water to the Zamzam well. Unless some careful hydrological work is done, it is possible the well may dry up after a period of drought.
The King of Saudi Arabia has therefore banned the export of Zamzam water and there are bottles of fake Zamzam water sold outside the country. Pilgrims on the haj are permitted to drink, and some small bottles supposedly containing a few millilitres are sold as souvenirs in Makka.
Zamzam water is otherwise used for the interior cleaning of the Kaaba.
Like water from Lourdes, it is supposed by some, not all, to have miraculous properties.
